Our Iceberg is Melting by John Kotter

Our Iceberg is Melting is a fable – a short story about a colony of Antarctic penguins whose idyllic lifestyle is facing potentially devastating environmental threats.  The penguins have two choices: they can ignore the danger (and most certainly perish) or they can take action to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.  Ultimately, they have to face the fact that their lives are about to change dramatically. How they decide to tackle these changes will determine their future.

Our Iceberg is Melting is all about learning to adapt to change.  It would be easy to discount the worth of this simple story if it were not for the fact that it was written by a well-respected organizational change expert, John Kotter.  Kotter’s highly acclaimed eight-step pattern for successful change is based on decades of research into how organizations, groups, and people can successfully overcome challenges and adapt to a new way of doing things. It is well worth reading if only to remind us that change is inevitable.  It is how we respond to these changes that will determine our future success.
