Job Search Tips for Mature Workers
A common concern for mature workers is possible age discrimination. Although some employers will favour youth, there are also others who prefer the skills and wisdom that have developed after many years of experience. Mature workers need to use age to their advantage.
Sell your experience
Include your accomplishments and emphasize how your experience can benefit potential employers when writing your resume, cover letter and during Interviews.
Sell results, not years
Hiring managers are looking for results. Talk about the return-on-investment an employer will receive because your skills can be put to use with little on-the-job training. Back up your accomplishments with benefit statements based on facts. Put the benefits in monetary terms, if possible. How can you save or make money for an employer?
Wear just one hat
If you have held a variety of roles and jobs, choose a specific job title/job objective to focus your skills on. Emphasize the aspects of your background that support your job objective. You generally need to show only 10 years’ work history.
Keep your skills current
Computer skills are important in most industries. Learn the most popular computer programs in your field. Most office jobs require you to use Email and the Internet along with a Windows-based program such as word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation applications. Many companies use Microsoft Word and Excel. Investigate any other skills you might need to update. Join online networking or professional development sites for your industry.
Network. Network. Network.
Networking is especially important for older workers because jobs at the senior levels are the least likely to be advertised. Use networking venues as opportunities to show what you can do. Consider getting involved with a professional association, volunteering to serve as a Board member or offering your services as a consultant.
