Talk Your Way To A Job

When you are looking for a new hairdresser, dentist or mechanic or simply want to find the best chocolate cake in town – how do you find these?

We usually discover the answers by talking to people we know – who might then refer us to someone they know. This is called “networking.” It is also one of the best ways to look for work as many jobs are unadvertised and the only way to find out about them is through word-of-mouth.

Networking can help you connect with almost anyone you’d like to meet. It is one of the most powerful and inexpensive self-marketing tools.  Make networking a priority to find your next job quickly.

Not sure where to start? Tell friends, relatives, neighbours and everyone else you meet the kind of work you are looking for and something about the industry you want to work in. Ask them to keep their eyes and ears open in case they discover something that might be a good fit for you – and to let you know if anything turns up. Follow up on any leads you are given. See if you can offer anything in return. If you make your job search more of a two-way street, it will be easier to ask others for assistance.

Talk to people while you are standing in line at the bank, grocery store or bus stop. After you introduce yourself, you might want to ease into saying you’re doing your best to find a job in your field and do they have any leads that might help. You never know who that person might know.

There are also networking organizations you can check out. Both the Nanaimo and Gabriola Chambers of Commerce offer regular mixers that are open to the public. You can join an industry-related group, either in person or online. You can also choose to share job leads with other job seekers you meet at SET.

If you are new to town, join the Newcomer’s Club. Visit the Volunteer Bureau to find opportunities to develop your skills and expand your list of contacts. Attend community events. Watching a local hockey game or shopping at the Farmer’s Market can give you an opportunity to meet new people who may have information about opportunities in your field.

Set yourself a goal of regular networking and see if it can lead you to your next job.
