Successful Online Applications

Preparation is the Key to Successful Online Applications

From our experience in the Resource Room, completing online applications can be time consuming and frustrating, particularly if you are not comfortable using a computer. If given a choice, it is usually easier to submit your resume and cover letter as email attachments. If you have to apply online, here are some tips to make the process a little easier.

  • Dedicate adequate time to complete the application process. It is difficult to predict how long it will take to apply online since every application is different. In our experience, applying online can take anywhere from 15 minutes to well over an hour.

  • Be prepared. Before starting, have all pertinent information at your fingertips. For example, have a paper copy of the job ad, your resume, references, etc.

  • Set up your email account beforehand. It is a good idea to set up an email account so that you have an email contact address to provide.

  • Save your resume and cover letter on a disk or flash drive. You will be able to retrieve them easily if you need to attach them to the application.

  • Save a copy of your resume in plain text as a Word document (without any formatting such as center, bold, or borders). In some cases you may have to type your resume directly into the online form. Rather than retyping it, you can copy and paste from your Word  document. This also ensures that your typed resume has been spell checked.

  • Have a pen and notepaper handy to record usernames and passwords. Some companies require you to set up an account before applying for specific postings. Once your account is set up, you will have to log on with your username and password to apply for individual job postings and to track the progress of your application.

  • Research the company beforehand. If you are not applying to a specific job posting, do some research beforehand so that you know what type of positions interest you. Some online applications ask you to choose your job preferences from a list of job titles.

  • Be sure your online application was received. Most companies confirm receipt. Some will give you a confirmation number or send you a confirmation email. Make a note of it and/or be sure to save the email.

Remember…the Resource Room staff can help you prepare your resume and cover letter, set up email accounts, send emails with attachments, and apply on-line.
