A new decade was ushered in last week and with it, thousands of resolutions for positive life changes in the coming year. Amidst promises made for diet, exercise, spending time with family and positive thinking were inevitably, a few resolutions to change employment. Many of us wrestle with employment questions at different points during our career.  There are so many important variables to consider that the prospect of sorting through the maze is sometimes overwhelming.

Barbara Moses in her book, What's Next, helps to navigate this maze and provides a clear and user-friendly road map toward career milestones, decisions and direction. The topics, tools and exercises build logically, enabling the reader to develop insights and conclusions that are right for them. Real examples and anecdotes provide validation that others have faced and overcome similar challenges and issues.

This book contains resources and information relevant for every career state. Chapter 1, “Know Yourself”, contains tips and tests for discovering one’s passions, motivations, and core competencies for the workplace. Chapter 2, “Find Your Perfect Path”, helps locate the career sector that best accommodates the type of career seeker identified in Chapter 1, and Chapter 3, “Find Great Work”, offers strategies and tools for securing a job in that field.

While most career manuals focus on finding a great job, this one also provides strategies for keeping that great job- or changing it, should the need or desire arise. This is what makes this book so effective. Chapter 4, “Overcome Career Challenges”, deals with dissatisfaction and career distress, as well as age-related career problems and the constant struggle to achieve work-life balance. The final chapter, “Boost Your Career Intelligence”, is an overall “how to” for remaining engaged in and enriched by the work world and contains a plethora of helpful hints for continued employability.

What's Next is about building personal knowledge and self awareness- key elements needed for successfully setting and achieving life and career goals. The quality, content and visual presentation of this book makes it an irresistible resource for anyone uncertain about what to do next in their career, and how to do it.
